In Zambia state education starts at the age of seven and the government schools have very limited resources and capacity. From school grade 8 onwards, which is approximately equivalent to secondary education in the UK, tuition fees are payable. In a country where the average income is $1 a day many parents cannot send their children to school because they do not have the money to pay for fees and uniforms. And many children have lost their parents to AIDS: the large majority of theĀ one million orphans in Zambia do not get the chance to go to school.
The Estelle Trust focuses much of its contribution directly or indirectly to the support of education and training projects. It has established a school at Fringilla in partnership with Arulussa Farm for children up to the age of 7 and is helping other communities to develop their educational facilities, especially those for orphans and vulnerable children.
Among other educational projects in the last two years the Trust has made significant contributions to the Natimwa Learning Centre at Kachele Village, the Chipembele Wildlife Education Centre in the Luanga Valley, the Kaliyangile Skills Training Centre at Chisamba and the Kasama Christian Community Care school project in the Northern Province.
